How to Calculate Ring Blank Length

Basic Formula:

Blank Length = Ring Circumference + (Band Width × π) + Waste Factor

Where:

  • Ring Circumference: The inside circumference of the desired ring size
  • Band Width: The width of the metal strip in mm
  • π (pi): Mathematical constant ≈ 3.14159
  • Waste Factor: Additional material for cutting, filing, and joining (typically 3-10%)

Professional Tips for Ring Making

Material Considerations:

  • Silver/Gold: 5-8% waste factor recommended
  • Platinum: 8-10% waste factor due to hardness
  • Copper/Brass: 3-5% waste factor sufficient
  • Titanium: 10-15% waste factor due to difficulty in working
  • Wide Bands: Add extra length for comfort fit (domed inside)

Joining Methods:

  • Butt Joint: Minimal additional length needed
  • Overlapping Joint: Add 2-3mm extra length
  • Scarf Joint: Add 3-5mm for angled cut
  • Soldering: Account for material flow and cleanup
  • Welding: Minimal material loss, precise measurements possible

Important Notes for Jewelers:

  • Always measure twice before cutting expensive metals
  • Consider the thickness of the metal when calculating for comfort fit
  • Account for any texturing or pattern work that may affect final size
  • Wide bands (6mm+) may need to be sized up by 1/4 to 1/2 size for comfort
  • Different metals have different spring-back characteristics
  • Temperature changes during work can affect measurements
